Pre-enrollment academic year 2019-2020
The pre-enrollment on doctoral programs for the academic year 2019-2020 will be done through the Virtual Office. The process can be started at Start Pre-enrollment (in Spanish).
Pre-enrollment period: From 2 to 30 September 2019, both inclusive.
The applicant must, likewise, include the required documentation that is listed below.
Calendar for actions
From 2 September to 30 September 2019: Pre-enrollment period to access doctorate programs.
Up until 25 October 2019: Review of requests and documentation presented, decision and assignment of tutor, if applicable, by the different Academic Committees, communication to the doctorands and the Doctoral School, and the assignation of the academic Tutor.
Up until 22 November 2019: Completion of enrollment by accepted applicants. (Once accepted, the students are under an obligation to complete their enrollment within the established period).
Appointment of the Thesis Director or Directors by the Academic Committees: Maximum time period 3 months, from their admission to the Doctoral Program, communication to the Doctorate School and the Doctorand.
Research Plan. Project and development of the doctoral thesis: Within a period of six months following admission to the Doctoral Program, the doctorand will prepare a Research Plan. The Research Plan that is prepared by the doctorand and approved by the Thesis Director/s must be approved by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program and will be uploaded to the VIRTUAL OFFICE by the doctorand.
Annually: The Academic Committee of the Doctorate Program will evaluate the Document of Activities of the Doctorand, the Research Plan and the development, current state and progress of the doctoral Thesis, through the Annual Assessment or Follow-up Report of the Tutor and/or Director.
All the documents that are cited are available from the portal of the Doctorate Schools and are accessible in electronic format under the menu heading Verificación y Sistema documental [Verification and Documentation System].
NOTE: As an exceptional measure and for duly justified reasons, the Academic Committees may agree upon the admission of doctorands on other dates and within different timeframes than those contemplated above.
In such cases, the Doctorate School will open an extraordinary timeframe for enrollment.
General requirements for access to a Doctoral Program
In general, it will necessary to hold official Spanish qualifications at both Graduate level, or equivalent, and University Master’s level, or equivalent, in order to access an official doctoral program, provided that at least 300 ECTS credits have been earnt in the course of both degree courses.
Applicants in one of the following circumstances will, likewise, be able to access the program:
1. Applicants holding an official Spanish university qualification, or from another member State of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), which is sufficient for access to Master’s Degree studies in accordance with the contents of art. 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, and who have passed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits in the set of official university studies, of which at least 60 must be at Master’s level.
2. Applicants holding an official Spanish qualification at Graduate level, the duration of which, in accordance with the norms of Community Law, will be of at least 300 ECTS credits. The graduates will by obligation have studied the training complements to which reference is made in article 7.2 of this norm, except where the study plan of the corresponding degree qualification includes training credits in research, with an educational value equivalent to the research-related credits from the Master’s Degree studies.
3. University graduates who, having gained a training placement following the corresponding exam to access specialized health training placements, will have completed at least two years of training with positive evaluations on a course leading to the award of one of the official qualifications from the specialisms of Health Sciences .
4. Applicants holding a qualification that was gained in a foreign educational system that requires no equivalence test, once the university has confirmed that it accredits a level of training that is equivalent to the official Spanish qualification of University Master’s Degree and that it authorizes access to doctoral studies in the country where the qualification was issued. This admission will, in no case, imply the official equivalence of the aforementioned qualification held by the interested party nor its recognition for any other purposes than to gain access to Doctoral studies.
5. Applicants holding another Spanish Doctoral qualification awarded in accordance with previous university regulations.
6. Applicants holding the Diploma in Advanced Studies awarded in accordance with the provisions of R.D. 778/1998, of 30 April, or having achieved investigative sufficiency regulated in R.D. 185/85, of 23 January.
7. Applicants holding an official university qualification that has the equivalence at Level 3 of the Marco Español de Cualificaciones para la Educación Superior (MECES) [Spanish Framework of Qualifications for Higher Education], in accordance with the procedure established in R.D. 967/2014, of 21 November, establishing the requirements and the procedure for equivalence testing and the declaration of the equivalence of an official university qualification and academic level and for the convalidation of foreign Higher Education studies, and the procedure to determine the correspondence at levels of the official qualifications of Architect, Engineer, Licentiate, Technical Architect, Technical and Diplomate Engineer.
By AGREEMENT, of 10 December 2013, of the Governance Committee of the University of Burgos, in approval of the procedure for access to official doctorate studies regulated in R.D. 99/2011, access is also open to Licentiates, Engineers and Architects.
EXPLANATORY NOTE: It is not possible to access doctoral studies with Master’s Degrees or equivalent that are solely accredited by a single University and no other State or private accreditation body.
Admission criteria
The Academic Committee of a Doctoral Program may establish additional requirements and criteria for the selection of applicants and their admission, for which reason applicants must, in each case, verify those established in each Doctoral Program (Art. 7 of R.D. 99/2011, of 28 January, in regulation of official doctoral studies and Art. 4 of Regulation Type of internal functioning of the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programs of the University of Burgos, approved by Agreement of its Governing Council of 25.--.13, BOUBU nº90, 31.3.13).
Required documentation
Electronic copies of the following documentation will be uploaded onto the platform during the administrative processing of the pre-enrollment request:
1. Official identity document (DNI/Passport/NIE).
2. Brief curriculum vitae.
3. Qualification giving access to the doctoral program, or alternatively, supplementary certification.
4. Academic degree certificate of the access qualification, showing the year and the commencement and the end of the course.
5. If applicable, request for admission to a doctoral program on a part time basis Request, authorization part time (in Spanish) (75.5 KB)
6. Applicants that access with a qualification as a licentiate, architect or engineer that corresponds to Level 3 (Master) can obtain the certificate from the following link.
7. Applicants with a qualification obtained in another country and with certification from the University that accredits that those studies grant access to doctoral studies.
8. Applicants with a qualification obtained in foreign countries outside the EHEA will present the receipt for payment of the fees for the evaluation of the academic records in relation to the foreign qualification to access the doctoral studies, which amounts to €210.97 in the academic year 2019-2020. They should contact the Doctorate School edoc@ubu.es for the issuance of the certificate. A copy of the payment receipt will be uploaded onto the platform with the rest of the documentation.
9. The academic documents for access issued in countries outside the EHEA will be presented duly legalized and translated, if necessary: Information on notarization of documents (in Spanish). The academic documents for access issued in EHEA countries will be presented with legally valid translations.
IMPORTANT: Applicants who have obtained the qualification for access at the University of Burgos will only have to present the request for pre-enrollment through the Virtual Office, a valid identity document (DNI/PASSPORT/NIE) and a brief curriculum vitae, the University having access to the remaining documentation.
Obligatory documentation that applicants who access under the provisions of R.D. 185/85, R.D. 778/98 or who hold a Doctoral qualification must provide.
1. Official valid identity document (DNI/Passport/NIE).
2. Brief curriculum vitae.
3. Qualification as a Licentiate, Engineer or Architect, or Doctor.
4. Personal academic certificate of doctoral studies completed.

IMPORTANT: Applicants who access with Investigative Sufficiency or DEA gained at the University of Burgos will only have to present the admission request to the Virtual Office, together with a valid copy of the DNI/Passport/NIE, and a brief curriculum vitae. In cases where their academic documentation was issued in foreign countries outside the EHEA, and they have yet to present duly legalized and translated copies of that documentation, they must do so, if required.
Legalization of foreign academic documents
Documents issued in other countries, for the purposes of validity in Spain, will have to meet the following requirements:
- They must be official and must be issued by the authorities that are duly authorized, in accordance with the legal order of the country in question.
- They must present legalized documents (Information on the legalization of documents) through diplomatic channels and, if applicable, with the Apostille of the Hague Convention.
- The documents must be accompanied, if applicable, by the corresponding official translation into Castilian Spanish, which can be completed in the following ways:
- By a sworn translator/interpreter, duly authorized and registered in Spain.
- By any diplomatic or consular representative of the Spanish State in another country.
- By diplomatic or consular representation in Spain of the country of which the applicant is a citizen or, if applicable, from which the document originated.
The legalization of documents issued by the authorities of member States of the European Union or of signatory countries to the European Economic Area Agreement will not be necessary. However, they will present the translation into Castilian Spanish.
